Vanessa was the creative director of Artext, an advertising company which she established in 1997.
In 2004, due to a severe car accident in Johannesburg, she spent ten years through the medical system reconstructing damage done to her face with a multi-disciplinary team.
At one stage this resulted in 53 specialists due to the complexity of her injuries.
In 2013, she used her patient experience and online marketing skills to diversify her business services by introducing medical website design with animated patient education because one of the biggest issues she experienced was the lack of online specialists and accurate informative resources. She later established hcsmSA and focused on her advocacy full-time in 2015.
Vanessa is an advisory board member for Doctors 2.0 and You, Paris, a past adjudicator and panel speaker for EyeforPharma , e-patient advisor for Docola, e-patient board advisor for InfectionControl.Tips and a member of The Walking Gallery of Healthcare.
She is also a civil partner of the Women Advancement Forum in Africa and won a WOS – Woman of the Year award for her online activism in 2015.
Vanessa presented an abstract about Universal Healthcare (UHC) at the Stanford University Medicine X | ED Conference in April 2017 and was awarded an e-Patient Scholarship in September 2017 to present her story about MRSA on the main stage. She is also an Accredited #HIMSS Social Media Ambassador.
